A court case is never only a legal event. A divorce, a custody battle, a workplace dispute or a criminal case can bring fear, shame, anger and grief, often for months or years. Psycho-legal support looks at both sides together.

What psycho-legal support means

It brings psychological understanding into legal situations. That can mean helping a client understand the emotional side of their case, preparing them to make clear decisions, assessing mental state when it is relevant to a case, or supporting victims and witnesses through the process.

Cases where it helps most

  • Divorce, separation and child custody
  • Domestic violence and abuse
  • Cases involving children, including POCSO matters
  • Workplace harassment and disputes
  • Criminal cases where mental health is a question
  • Medico-legal cases (MLC) where medical and legal findings meet

Why it makes a difference

  • Clearer decisions. Stress and anger narrow thinking. Support helps people weigh options calmly, including settlement and mediation.
  • Less re-traumatisation. Victims and children can give evidence with less harm when the process is handled sensitively.
  • Better understanding in court. Psychological assessment can help courts understand behaviour, capacity and risk.
  • Healing alongside the case. Legal outcomes take time; mental health cannot wait until the verdict.

Mental health and the law

Indian law increasingly recognises mental health. The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 sets out the rights of people with mental illness, and courts routinely consider psychological reports in custody, criminal and other matters.

When a legal matter is also a human one, you should not have to choose between a lawyer who understands the law and a psychologist who understands you. Psycho-legal consultation brings the two together.
